Video Exporting Time – To Bill or Not to Bill?

For motion graphics artists, animators, and video professionals, exporting time is dull. Every designer knows that. It’s not the flashy, creative part of the process with things changing and moving. However, it’s just as important as everything that went into it.

 

Without exporting, there would be no final video. There would be no graphics. There would be nothing to deliver. The work is not done until a designer can leave their computer and not worry about the project anymore.

 

Exporting time is billable time for a designer.

It’s an incredibly memory-intensive task and it ties up an animator’s computer.

It requires a motion graphics artist to check back frequently to make sure the export didn’t fail for any reason.

It creates wear-and-tear that might require a part in a computer to be replaced sooner.

It uses electricity that has to be paid for.

And most importantly – it ties up the computer and prevents or slows working on other projects.

 

Exporting is like cooking time at a bakery. You wouldn’t go to a bakery and say, “Hey I’d love the cake right there, but I only want to pay for the time it takes to decorate it. I don’t want to pay for the time it’s in the oven baking.”

 

If the cake is in the oven, it prevents other cakes from being made. That oven requires electricity and upkeep to make sure it runs to make your cake. Just because the baker doesn’t stand there staring at the oven for 2 hours doesn’t mean they shouldn’t bill you for it.

 

For this reason, exporting is a cost of doing business, and it should always be billed in full.
