The “Order of Ikkos” medallion is a new award planned by the US Olympic Committee for the Coaches of athletes who win Olympic medals. Named for Ikkos of Tarentum, the first recorded Olympic coach.

Jamie is an art instructor at UNC Charlotte. His winning design, selected out of 28 entries, depicts the passing of a torch, representing guidance from coach to athlete. The torch has some slick detail in the flame that I think really make the piece. Jamie said it was inspired by the Statue of Liberty torch. Also included are 50 stars (50 states) streaming from the flame and some distinctly Greek styled type. Read the UNC Charlotte press release here for more info.

Anyone lucky enough to have had Jamie as a teacher at UNC Charlotte knows he is one of the more colorful personalities in the art department and a great illustrator, painter… artist. Jamie has also been recognized in recent years by the US Mint as a Master Designer. He designed the 2005 American Bison Nickel reverse and the face of the Jefferson 1800 Nickel in 2006.
